Marilyn attended Tahlequah Public Schools and was a Tahlequah High School graduate in 1956. Upon graduation, she went on to work as a switchboard operator for the local telephone company, while attending Northeastern State University as an undergrad. During her early college years, Marilyn crossed paths with Jerald Ross Underwood, who quickly became the love of her life. Ross and Marilyn were happily married on June 6, 1958, at her parents' home in Tahlequah, and soon after started their family. After the children reached school age, Marilyn began a long career in retail sales working at Workman's Department Store and C.R. Anthony's where she made many lifelong friends. Marilyn's last position was as a clerk at the tag office in Tahlequah.
Marilyn enjoyed life and loved telling stories of family history, heritage, and life in Tahlequah. She enjoyed crafting and shopping trips with her girls. She loved spending time with her grandchildren and was extremely proud of their accomplishments. Marilyn was a beauty with a one-of-a-kind smile that lit up every room she entered. When going out with their mom, her children often joked that she must be related to everyone in Tahlequah, because she had a connection with everyone she met. Marilyn touched many lives over the years and will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Jerald Ross Underwood; and her parents, Truman and Jackie Justus.
Marilyn is survived by a loving family which includes her children, Randy Underwood and wife Debbie; Mike Underwood and wife Leigh; Deena Jones and husband Stephen, all of Tahlequah; her great-aunt, Roxie Drumright of Barstow, California; her grandchildren, Alisha Underwood, Alan Underwood, Lance Underwood, Megan Underwood, Lynly Coldwell, Lauren Brooke Jones; her great-grandchildren, Logan Underwood, John Michael Coldwell, Barbara Masters of Oklahoma City, Barbara Cleveland of Murphys, California; a host of special cousins and extended family; and her beloved Yorkie, Abby.
