Willie's Story

TAHLEQUAH – Willie Wilson Ryder was born on Jan. 27, 1955, in Tahlequah and passed away June 18, 2015, in Tulsa after suffering from a long illness. He was the son of Willie Ryder and Ida Marie (Tye) Ryder. Willie graduated from Tahlequah High School in 1974 and later attended Northeastern State University and Indian Capital Technology Center in Muskogee. Willie became a licensed plumber and operated Ryder Plumbing, Heating, and Air Conditioning in Tahlequah. He later obtained the Roto-Rooter franchise to Tahlequah. Willie recently retired as a security guard. On June 12, 1976, he married Mary Byrd in Tahlequah. Of this union was born a son, Shawn Lee Ryder, and twin daughters, Alice Marie Ryder and Amy Louise Ryder. Willie enjoyed martial arts and scuba diving in his youth. He enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren. Willie was preceded in death by his son, Shawn Lee Ryder; his mother, Ida Marie (Tye) Ryder; his father, Willie Ryder; and his sister, Bertha Faye (Ryder) Stierwalt. Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Mary Ryder of Tulsa; Alice Nysveen and husband Cary of Tulsa; and Amy Handley and her husband J.D. of Tulsa. “Papa” will be greatly missed by his four grandchildren, Logan Nysveen, Victor Nysveen, Magenta Handley, and Veronica Handley.
