Walter Lee “Son” Kessinger was born Sept. 10, 1928, in Mannford, Okla., to William Arthur and Frances Eva (Young) Kessinger, and departed this life Jan. 20, 2016, in Tahlequah, at the age of 87 years, 4 months and 10 days. Son served in the U.S. Army from 1952, until his honorable discharge in 1954. He was a member of the American Legion. He was a faithful member of Grace Baptist Church since 1975. Son served his community as a law enforcement officer for the county and later retiring as Tahlequah City Police Officer. He had a giving heart and he faithfully donated to St. Jude’s, Samaritan’s Purse, Boys Town, Billy Graham Ministries and Easter Seals. Son insisted on putting cash in the envelopes because, “You never know who might need it.” He enjoyed working crossword puzzles, playing solitaire, raising tomatoes, and reading the newspaper. Son loved his little dog, Ratty, and treated him as one of the family. Son touched many lives over the years and will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Juanita (Cook) Kessinger; and his stepdaughter, Frankie Cox. He is survived by a loving family which includes his brother, Billie Kessinger and wife Ann of Tahlequah; his nieces, Gail Blevins and husband Larry of Tahlequah, Shirley Copeland and husband Jess of Tahlequah, Janice Copeland and husband Tommy of Proctor, and Verna McNeil of Tahlequah; his nephew, Richard Kessinger and wife Christie of Tahlequah; a very special nurse, Heather Lee Cantrell; special friends and neighbors, Steve and Tammy Young and their sons Andrew and Ryan; and four step-grandchildren.
