Virginia's Story

TAHLEQUAH – Virginia “Sis” Green Shores, formerly of Tahlequah, passed away in Tulsa June 9, 2015, aged 89 years. Virginia was the daughter of Acie and Sarah (Carter) Green was born Feb. 28, 1926, on the family farm near Park Hill. Virginia received her early education at the Carter School and she graduated in 1944 from Tahlequah City High School. Virginia attended Northeastern State University where she was granted an Emergency Wartime Teaching Certificate; after which she taught at Pigeon and the Carter School. Virginia moved to Tulsa in 1953, where, along with family responsibilities, she was also employed by Farmers Insurance. Virginia married Floyd Shores in 1954. They continued to make their home in Tulsa, raising their two children, Sara Lynn and Wayne. Virginia had many interests. A great sports fan, she was especially fond of fishing and hunting. During her younger years, Virginia was a member of the Tahlequah Round-up Club. A skilled rider, Virginia was an adept barrel racer. Dancing was another of Virginia’s favorite activities. Many Saturday evenings were spent at local dances with her brothers and friends. Virginia was lifetime member of the Eastern Star, having joined Tahlequah Chapter No. 148 in 1951. Virginia was also an active member of the Salvation Army, as long as her health allowed. Virginia was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Junior, Chester and Harold Green; one sister, Bernice Green and her husband Floyd Shores. Virginia is survived by her daughter, Sara Lynn Jackson of Park Hill; and son, Wayne (June) Shores of Park Hill. She is also survived by six grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends. Funeral Services for Virginia will be held in Tulsa at Butler-Stumpff Funeral Home Chapel, 10 a.m., Thursday, June 11. Graveside Services will be held at the Tahlequah City Cemetery at 2 p.m., Thursday, June 11. Services are under the direction of Butler-Stumpff Funeral Home, www.Butler-Stumpff.com.
