Virginia Lee Campbell-Carey was born in Tahlequah, OK, on March 9th, 1934, the daughter of Charley and Lydia (Goingsnake) Campbell. She had two brothers, Johnnie and Willie. She attended school and graduated from Glendale High School in 1962 and obtained her bachelor's degree in social work from the California State University at Los Angeles, in 1997. It was while living in Tahlequah that she met the love of her life, Levi Carey Sr. at a church singing and the two of them were joined in wedlock on December 23rd, 1955, in Los Angeles, CA.
Virginia worked for Capital Records as Director of Quality Assurance, and thoroughly enjoyed the entertainment industry, working with stars from all genres of music such as Leon Russell, Kenny Rogers and the Beatles. Virginia and her husband Levi often worked as technical consultants for the Cherokee Language in films such as the Alamo and The Cherokee Word for Water. Virginia was a dedicated Master teacher of the Cherokee Language, and was extremely proud of her heritage working tirelessly to preserve the language for the many generations to follow. She loved people, and was always present at cultural events, wherever she could meet people and expand their horizons. She loved shopping, traveling, quilting and long rides on Saturday mornings. From bowling to ballet, Virginia was up for any activity where she could be with those she loved the most, her family, including Brownie, Bebe, and Lady, her devoted canine companions, who gave her so much joy an unconditional love.
A kind and loving Mother, Grandmother and Great-Grandmother, she was always giving of her time and talents. She was Director of the Indian Free Clinic in Los Angeles, California in 1970, a member of Windfeather organization for Indian Issues founded by Connie Stevens 1990, and the Children's Peace Foundation established by Mohammad Ali in 1984, The Children of the World Project (1984) and active member of the Screen Actors Guild until 2013. A Baptist by faith and a member of the Elm Tree Baptist Church in Tahlequah, the church family were a second family to her, and she adored them all. Actively working for 60 years, she retired, and enjoyed the special times she shared in the company of her great grandchildren, Mark, Charles, and Wyatt. The Lord called this good and faithful servant home from her labors on January 5th, 2017 from her home in Cherokee County, with her loving family close by her side. She will be greatly missed for all the love and wisdom she gave.
