Sean's Story

Funeral services for Sean Freedom Cookson, 23, of Tahlequah will be held on Saturday, March 4, 2017 at 11:00 AM at the NSU Multi-Purpose Event in Tahlequah, Oklahoma. Visitation will be Friday evening at Stephens-Key Chapel in Pryor from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. Rev. Brandon Wells will officiate along with Professor Diane Hammons. Services are entrusted to Stephens-Key Funeral and Cremation Care.
Sean Freedom Cookson was born on September 12, 1993 to Carroll Jeff II and Cindi Louise (Sears) Cookson in Tahlequah. He passed away on February 27, 2017 in Tulsa, Oklahoma at the age of 23 years, 5 months and 15 days.
Sean grew up and attended school in Tahlequah. He played basketball for Tahlequah High School and graduated in 2012. After high school he attended college at Northeastern State University and achieved a bachelor's degree. He was very active at NSU, he played tuba and trombone in the band, and was the school mascot, "Rowdy the Riverhawk." Sean worked as an office aid in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction in the College of Education. He also was active and competed in the Mock Court at NSU.
On June 4, 2016 he married Cassandra Harman in Parkhill, Oklahoma. He and Cassandra made their home in Tahlequah and were enjoying being newlyweds. On February 1, 2017 he took his first job in law enforcement as a deputy for the Craig County Sheriff's Office. He was excited to start this new adventure and was well liked by his "blue" family.
Sean loved sporting events of any kind, camping and hiking. He also loved playing with his dogs, Lady Lou and Jessie Bear and spending time with his wife, Cassandra. He was fun loving guy who was loved by all who knew him and he will be deeply missed.
He is survived by his wife, Cassandra, of the home; his mother Cindi Hoopingarner and husband Paul of Tahlequah; his father Jeff Cookson of Tahlequah; his grandparents, Darlene Cookson of Tahlequah, Stan Hatasaka of Long Beach, California, and Nancy Shouse of Tahlequah; four brothers, Richard Cookson of Tahlequah, Robert Michaelson and wife Sara of North Bend, Oregon, Ryan Michaelson and wife Crystal of Phoenix, Arizona and Dylan Cookson of Tahlequah; one sister Kristen Cookson of Tahlequah; his mother in law Colleen Harman and husband Jack of Big Cabin and several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and other relatives and friends.
He is preceded in death by his grandparents, Sonny Cookson, Sally Hatasaka and Rodney Wright.
