TAHLEQUAH – Rebecca Jane Smith Knox was born Nov. 15, 1952 in Anthony, Kan., to Clarence M. and Mary R. (Crampton) Smith. Becky attended school in Wichita, Kan., and graduated from East High. She received her degree from Oxnard College in California. After a courageous battle with cancer, Becky passed away at her home in Welling, Okla., early on Tuesday morning, Nov. 17, 2015. She was surrounded by loving family; her husband, Sid Knox; daughter “Liz”; and son Jonathan. Becky’s childhood was of two worlds; during her summers, she was a country girl, working hard with her family on the farm in Manchester, Okla., along with her sister and two brothers. During the school year, the family lived in Wichita, Kan., where her father taught high school. Becky enjoyed sharing entertaining life stories from her unique “country farm girl, city girl” childhood, sprinkled with frequent quotations from her dedicated mother. After she left Kansas, Becky lived in Dallas, then Guam with her first husband, where she had her first child, Elizabeth. She later moved to Oxnard, Calif., where she attended college and met Sid Knox. They were married in 1998. Sid, Becky and their son Jon then traveled to Welling, Okla., in fall 1993, and they made their home there the past 22 years. Family, friends, community, God and country were very important to Becky. She often claimed she was a professional volunteer. She spent her entire life selflessly and cheerfully serving the causes she believed in. Becky was a rare and wonderful person who was a “giver” of time. She dedicated her efforts to many community organizations, including American Red Cross Blood Drive, Tahlequah Friends of the Library, Tahlequah City Hospital Auxiliary, and especially Camp Fred Darby and Boy Scouts of America. Becky loved to laugh and was the eternal optimist. She was a teacher of skills, morals, values, common sense, thriftiness, and did good deeds daily. She was a loyal true friend to many and lived her life, setting an example of all she believed in. The loss of our dear beloved Becky will be felt through our entire community. Becky was preceded in death by her parents, C.M. and Mary (Crampton) Smith; her brother, Thomas “Tom” Smith; and her sister of 11 months, Sally Sue. Becky will be deeply missed by her husband, Sid Knox of Welling; son Kris Knox and his wife, Dawn, of Minnesota; daughters Monica Knox of California, and Elizabeth “Liz” Cox and her husband Marshall of Wichita, Kan.; son Jonathan Knox of Oklahoma City; her sister, Carol Norton of Texas; her brother, Chris Smith and wife Marilyn of Manchester; many nieces, nephews, grandkids, and great-grands, along with Becky’s “Oklahoma sister,” Buzzy Manning; and a great host of many other relatives and dear friends. Memorial services are Saturday, Nov. 28, 2015, at 10 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Tahlequah, OK 74464. Memorial donations should be made to Tahlequah Public Library.
