OWASSO – Nina Pearl (Miller) Porter was born July 5, 1924, to Thomas Winfield Miller and Nancy Ann (Parks) Miller at home on their farm northeast of Welch. She passed on to her heavenly home April 7, 2015, in Owasso, at the age of 90 years. The eighth of 11 children, Nina was raised with one sister and nine brothers and attended the one-room Banner School. After the death of her mother when Nina was 13, she moved from the farm to live with an aunt and uncle in Miami. She graduated from Miami High School in 1942, worked for the Puritan Dairy and later as a telephone operator. While there, she met Emerson T. Porter, an accountant at then Spartan Aircraft Company and the associated flying school where pilots, many British cadets, were being trained during World War II. They were married Sept. 21, 1944, in Miami and moved to Tulsa one year later. Nina and Emerson celebrated 67 years of marriage and had two children. She was a member of Sheridan Avenue United Methodist Church. Nina found great joy in cooking, gardening, sewing, singing and shopping for her family. She was also a Brownie troop leader, Cub Scout den mother, women’s bowling league member and an Avon representative. In her later years, she introduced herself as “Nina Pearl, the Country Girl” and was known as “The Songbird” of her Owasso assisted living community. Loving family members include daughter and son-in-law, Sueann and William Freeman of Tahlequah; son and daughter-in-law, Rex and Victoria Porter of Owasso; seven grandchildren: Scott Freeman and wife Julie, Heather Foster and husband Buddy Ray, Jimmy Smittle and wife Melissa, Matt Smittle and wife Annmarie, Kara Caldwell and husband Sandy, Sara Lewis and husband Rob, and Chuck Porter; nine great-grandchildren: Tim, Taylor, Trisha, Margaret, Gracie, Jimmy, Naia, Jack and Kooper; and seven great-great-grandchildren: Vanassa, Drake, Benjamin, Jaden, Penelope, Madeline and Chloe. Also, two brothers, Mack Miller and Joe Miller and wife Billie, and many nieces and nephews. Nina was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Irene Phillips and husband Lester; seven brothers: Fred Miller and wife Annie Pearl, Woodrow Miller, Turk Miller and wife Pearl, Bill Miller, Tom Miller, Frank Miller and wife Ethel, and Jack Miller; sister-in-law, Eveleen Polone and husband Tiff; and several nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. before the 10 a.m. Celebration of Life Service on Monday, April 13, at Mowery Funeral Service Chapel in Owasso. The Rev. Pat Freeman and Rob Lewis will officiate and Pastor Paul Purifoy will serve as vocalist. Serving as casket bearers will be grandsons Scott Freeman, Buddy Ray Foster, Jimmy Smittle, Matt Smittle, Sandy Caldwell and Chuck Porter. Interment will be at Memorial Park Cemetery in Tulsa.
