George's Story

TAHLEQUAH – Funeral services for George Grasshopper, 65, are 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 16, at Green Country Funeral Home. The family will receive friends Thursday evening 6–8 p.m. at Green Country Funeral Home. Officiating will be Rev. Salaw Hummingbird of the Big Cypress Seminole Indian Reservation and Pastor Gil Hooper. Pallbearers are Gregory Grogan, Michael Grasshopper, Archie Vance, Nathan Blackfox, and Homer Primeux. Honorary pallbearer is Earl Deerinwater. Interment will follow in the Towie Cemetery under the care of Green Country Funeral Home. Online condolences for the family may be left at tahlequahfuneral.com. George Grasshopper was born in Tahlequah on July 2, 1950, to Dick and Katie (Smith) Grasshopper. He passed from this life on Oct. 9, 2015, in Clewiston, Fla., with his family at his side. George attended school at Shady Grove and Tahlequah before attending Bacone College. In 1980, he moved to Florida and began working for the Seminole Tribe where he retired as recreation director on the Big Cypress Seminole Reservation where he resided. George was a member of the Big Cypress Baptist Church. George was preceded in death by his daughter, Georgina Grasshopper Bert; a brother, Robert Whitener; two sisters, Jo Ann Knight and Dorothy Bark; and his parents, Katie and Dick Grasshopper. He leaves behind his wife, Dale of the home; sons, Jason Grasshopper and wife Katherine of Weston, Fla., and Joseph Grasshopper and wife Sheena of Tahlequah; 21 grandchildren, including four raised in the home, Katherine Bert, Roderick Bert, Kylen Jumper and Johnnie Sue Russell; a brother, Tom Whitener of Tahlequah; three sisters, Mary Lou Deerinwater of Hulbert, Mary Jane Washington of Moody, and Peggy Bluebird also of Hulbert; he also leaves behind many extended family members, friends and loved ones.
