MCMINNVILLE, Ore. – On Sunday, April 26, 2015, the Lord whispered into Finis D. Carter’s ear, “When you have a second…” And knowing exactly what that meant, he went home to be with his Savior and be reunited with his beloved wife. Finis was born Jan. 19, 1937, in Tahlequah, to Rice and Zella (Cochrum) Carter. His brothers, Deward Clifton, Earl Eugene, Robert K (Jack), Felix, and Clell Carter, preceded him in death. Two sisters, Wanda MaeDean Carter Collins and Mary Madge Carter, survive him, as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was a registered member of the Cherokee Tribe. He graduated from Tahlequah High School in 1955, and then he moved to Oregon in 1960 after serving in the U.S. Army. Finis married Nancy Ruth Collins on April 6, 1967. They were married for nearly 38 years before Nancy passed away on April 3, 2005. Their two children, Clayton Carter and Jane Ellen Carter, as well as three grandsons, George Daniel, Wayne Carter, and Aaron Hess, survive them. He devoted his career to the title insurance and escrow business, first in Portland, Ore., working for Title Insurance Company of Oregon, later First American Title, and then moving to Yamhill County where he founded Northwest Title Company in 1974. He retired and sold his company to First American in June 2004. Finis loved playing golf with his Salishan buddies of over 40 years. He enjoyed nature, especially when he was able to sneak away early on a Saturday morning to go duck hunting or spend the weekend fishing at the coast. He was passionate about education, as was his wife. Services will be at Macy and Sons Funeral Home in McMinnville, Ore., on Thursday, May 7, at 2:30 p.m. with a reception to follow at Michelbook Country Club. In the spirit of Finis’ admirable character trait of generosity, the family suggests that in lieu of flowers a donation be made to the person or organization of your choice.
