Charley's Story

TAHLEQUAH – Funeral services for Charley Wesley Kirk, are 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 3, at the First Baptist Church in Tahlequah. Officiating will be Rev. Lamon Garrison. Interment will be held in the Park Hill Cemetery under the care of Green Country Funeral Home. Charley Kirk was born at home on Dec. 6, 1926, in the community of Bald Hill, south of Tahlequah. He was a life long rancher and business man. Charley served his country with the U.S. Army and was deployed to Japan at the end of World War II. In his younger years, Charley had the reputation of being able to rope anything – once roping a buffalo, being one of the few men in Cherokee County to ever do so. For over 30 years Charley and Carl Greenhaw operated the Tahlequah live stock auction. He sold his interest to Carl in the mid 1980s. Charley departed this life at the age of 88, early in the morning on Monday, July 27, 2015. He was an avid horseman and cowboy who loved to ride, and did so up until the day prior to the his passing. Charley loved his cow dogs and coon dogs, and had a passion for both. He looked forward to coon hunting season and working his cattle with a good set of cow dogs. Charley is proceeded in death by Emma and Ernest Kirk, his mother and father; his loving wife of more than 65 years, Maurine Kirk; a sister, Iris Sartain; a brother, Guy Kirk; and a nephew David Sartain. Charley is survived by his sister, Anna Lee Kirk of Tahlequah; his son, George and wife Ruth; grandson, Mikal and his wife Nicole, all of Cookson; a niece, Amber and her husband Warren Camp; beloved grandnieces, Madison of Arkansas, Cyndi Dotson and husband Brandon; niece, Beverly Stewart and husband Charles; nephew, Charles Sartain and wife Karen; grandniece, Jennifer Williamson and husband Wayne; and many other nieces, nephews, and great-great-nieces and nephews.
