Thomas's Story

TAHLEQUAH – Thomas Pearson Spears (Tommy) was born on Dec. 29, 1936, to Thomas Dixon Spears and Philadelphia (Delphia) Spears. He passed from this life on April 3, 2015. Tommy married Mary Carleta (Maxey) Spears on Feb. 17, 1958. They were married 57 years and had five children (2 daughters and three sons): Sharon and Bobby Brewster, Thomas Spears, Connie McCall, Frank and Reba Spears, and Ronnie and Amy Spears, all of Tahlequah. Tommy had nine grandchildren: Larry Caviness Jr., Sarah Thirsty, Sharon Ferrell, John Spears, Justin and Scott McCall, Michael Spears, Courtney and Cassidy Spears; and nine great-grandchildren: Larry Caviness III, Austin and Destiny Caviness, Noah Thirsty, Pearl McCall, Bridget, Emily and Kate McCall, and Mikala Spears. Tommy was survived by nine brothers and sisters: Frank and Coeta Webb, Ronnie and Sherry Spears, Donnie and Patty Spears, Denver and Donna Spears, Phillip and Margie Wilson, and Georgina Szcygiel, all of Tahlequah; Patricia and Ron Whiting of Afton; Loretta and Cody Cribbs of Altus; Erma and Eddie Rogers of Rogers, Ark.; and a host of nieces and nephews. Tommy was preceded in death by his parents, Tom Spears and Delphia Dennis; and siblings, Gayle McCurly and Jimmy Spears. Tommy was a veteran of the Air Force. He attended Okmulgee State Tech for carpentry. He built his own business, S & O Floor Covering, with his partner Jim Ott, and afterward S & W Grocery with partners Frank and Coeta Webb in the Briggs area. Directly after this, Tommy started his own company, Spears and Sons Construction, which is still in business today. He built many new houses and did remodeling throughout Tahlequah, Lake Tenkiller and the surrounding areas. One of his specialties was cabinetry work. Tommy was a long-standing member of Eldon Baptist Church for 41 years. He was a dedicated Christian, husband, father, brother, uncle, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend. We are so very thankful for the time we had with him and we will all miss him dearly. Graveside service was held by Green Country Funeral Home at -Manus Cemetery on April 4 with Pastor Jess French officiating. One of Tommy’s favorite songs was “Consider the Lilies” which was sung by Tommy’s daughter, Sharon Brewster, and Jess French in dedication to her dad.
