TAHLEQUAH - Funeral services for Rufus J. Liles, 71, of Tahlequah, Okla., are 2 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 14, 2015, at Green Country Funeral Home. Officiating will be Rev. Matt Lawrence. Serving as pallbearers are Butch Cowan, Ron Hagel, Shiloh Shores, James Wilson, Leroy Baker and Dean Williams. Interment will follow in the Park Hill Cemetery under the care of Green Country Funeral Home. Visitation will be Tuesday, Oct. 13, 2015, from 9 a.m. – 8 p.m. with the family receiving friends from 6-8 p.m. Online condolences may be left at tahlequahfuneral.com. Rufus J. Liles was born in Checotah, Okla., on Nov. 14, 1943, to Clarence and Alma (Winton) Liles. He passed away on Oct. 10, 2015, in Tahlequah, Okla.. Rufus was a 1962 graduate of Checotah High School. On April 17, 1965, in Sallisaw, Okla., he and Janice Taylor were married. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary this past April. He attended Northeastern State College and graduated in 1966. The following year, in 1967, he taught school in Greenfield, Mo. In 1971 Rufus completed his master’s degree in education. He taught for Muskogee Public Schools before coming to Tahlequah Junior High, where he taught physical science until he retired in 2000, teaching for more than 24 years. Rufus was an avid sportsman and enjoyed hunting, fishing and Cardinals baseball. He loved his family; especially his grandchildren. He was a long-time member at Carter Baptist Church, where he served as a Deacon and Sunday school teacher.
