Rickey Joe Hix was born in Tahlequah on Jan. 23, 1958, to Joe Edward and Roberta Mae (Simpson) Hix. He passed away unexpectedly on Dec. 9, 2015, in Tahlequah, surrounded by his loved ones. Rick grew up in the foothills of the Illinois River. He was a 1976 graduate of Tahlequah High School and was a member of the State Champion Wrestling Team. On July 21, 1978, he married Rita Hoffman, the love of his life. Rick and Rita spent 37 years and 5 months of marriage together. Rick went to work on the pipeline where he learned his trade of operating heavy equipment becoming a accomplished backhoe operator. He owned Rick Hix Excavation, which was founded in 1983, working in and around Cherokee County since that time. He enjoyed the outdoors, hunting coon, elk, and deer. He also was an avid collector of arrowheads which led to his passion of flint knapping. Rick loved to read and was the family historian and enjoyed sharing stories with others. Rick never met a stranger, visiting with everyone he met. He was a happy person and enjoyed being a prankster. Rick had always loved the farm and had plans to run cattle following his retirement from the excavation business. His greatest accomplishment was becoming a Pa-Pa to his grandchildren Ollie and Maddie in 2014. Rick was preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Roberta Hix; his father-in-law, O.W. Hoffman; and sister-in-law, Mary Roach. He is survived by his wife, Rita of the home; three children, Rashelle Hix and husband Corey Lawson of Arlington, Va., Haley Jo Hix of Tahlequah, and Emily VanDyke and husband Chris, also of Tahlequah; two grandchildren, Oliver Hix Lawson and Madilyn VanDyke; a brother, Danny Hix and wife Carolyn; four sisters, Connie Trammel and husband Larry, Anna Marie Sanders and husband Jeff, and twin sisters, Robin Hunter and husband Kirk, and Rhonda Hix; two sisters-in-law, Joyce Moss and husband Marty and Oleta Mabray and husband Gene; three brothers-in-law, Winston Hoffman, Wesley Hoffman, and Paul Roach; his mother-in-law, Virginia Hoffman; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews; and many, many, friends too numerous to mention. Green Country Funeral Home, 203 S. Commercial Road, 918-458-5055.
