Margaret's Story

SALLISAW – Margaret Lou Steely, 83, a longtime resident of Tahlequah, passed away peacefully Saturday, July 18, 2015, with her family by her side. She was born Oct. 1, 1931, in Dripping Springs, Ark., to Clarence and Bessie (Matlock) Briley. One of seven children, she grew up and attended the public schools in Cedarville, Ark. On Oct. 15, 1948, Margaret married the love of her life, Hugh Truman Steely at Fort Smith, Ark. They celebrated over 64 years of marriage together. After high school, Margaret attended Northeastern Oklahoma State University, where she received her bachelor’s and master’s in education degrees. Her family kindly recalls how dedicated Margaret was to being a teacher and also helping others. During her career as a teacher, she was recognized for several awards including “Teacher of the Year.” Margaret’s hobbies included crappie fishing, gardening and cooking. Her family remembers that when you left her home, you did not leave empty handed or hungry. She is also remembered for her “green thumb” and the amazing array of flowers in her yard. She is preceded in death by her husband, H.T. Steely; her parents; her son, Ron Steely; her two brothers; and her four sisters. Margaret is survived by her son, Alan Steely of Tahlequah; her daughter, Diane Robinson and husband Joe of Muskogee; her grandsons, Alan Ward Steely, Alex Steely, Joey Robinson and Brett Robinson; her great-grandchildren, Amelia Steely, Darrien Robinson and Kadien Robinson; her sisters-in-law, Doris Steely and Joyce Steely, both of Short; and many nieces and nephews and friends. Margaret’s family would like to express a special word of thanks to her caretaker family: Ericka Carr, Gwen Keys, Marilyn McDowell and First Choice Hospice. A family conducted memorial service will be at Akins Cemetery on Saturday, July 25, at 10 a.m. Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Cornerstone Funeral Home and Crematory, 1830 N.
