Jeri Lyn Merkley, 53, of Stilwell, OK, passed away Sunday, March 26th after a short battle with cancer. She was born at Dugway Proving Ground, UT, to William "Jerry" Merkley & Patsy (Hutson) Merkley.
Jeri attended Forest Park High School in Beaumont, Texas. She graduated from Northeastern State University, Tahlequah, OK, with a Bachelor's Degree in Political Science. Jeri went on to Syracuse University, Syracuse, NY, and graduated in the top 10 percent of her class with a Master's Degree in Public Administration and a Juris Doctor degree in law. Jeri passed the New York State Bar Exam her first try and was published in the Syracuse Law Review.
Jeri was an officer in the United States Army and served as an attorney in the Judge Advocate General's (JAG) Corps at Fort Benning, GA. Jeri was commissioned as a First Lieutenant and attained the rank of Captain in only 6 months.
After honorably serving her country, Jeri moved back to Oklahoma and helped care for her terminally ill father. Her family was very important to her and she especially loved spending time with her niece and nephews. She lived for a short time in Greenville, TX, as well as Haskell, OK, to be near them. She is survived by her mother, Pat Merkley, of the home, her brother, Frank Merkley & his wife Glenda, of Haskell, OK, sister Nancy (Merkley) Polk & her husband Bill, of Greenville, TX, nephew Trey Merkley & his wife Brittainee, of Okmulgee, OK, niece & nephew Jennifer & Tyler Polk of Greenville, TX, her aunt, Billie Hutson, of Tahlequah, OK, and her very special companion, her Boston Terrier rescue dog, Wally.
Jeri was never one who craved attention and requested no funeral. The family will be holding a private memorial service to scatter her ashes at a later date.
