Dudley's Story

On Friday 12 May 2017 we lost our beloved husband, father and grandfather Dudley Jesse Brown, 76, of Tahlequah, OK. Dudley was born in Columbia, MO on 14 November 1940.
Dudley was raised in Missouri, Massachusetts, North Carolina, and New York, he graduated from High School in Skaneateles, NY. These early years formed the basis of his love of learning, working the land, construction, singing and acting.
Dudley began his academic years at St. Lawrence University, graduated American University of Beirut, Lebanon with a BA in Economics and Sociology in 1962, from City College of New York he earned his Masters of English in 1967, and his ABD in English from Oklahoma State University in 1981.
Dudley married Sara Nordhold on 15 June 1963. Together they lived and traveled the world. They shared their love of life and joy of spirit in each place they lived. They raised three children and truly delighted in their grandchildren.
Dudley was a life long teacher, performer, justice worker, musician and reader. He taught in New York, Zambia, Fairfax, VA, Libya, and Stillwater, Tahlequah, and Stillwell in Oklahoma, he shared his love of music and acting in all of the places they lived.
He was a faithful member of Tahlequah First United Methodist Church, actively participating in all facets in the life of the congregation, from choir, Sunday school, helping with youth, mission, and a founding member of the Feed my Sheep ministry. He was part of numerous local and international mission teams.
He was a founding member of the Tahlequah chapter of Habitat for Humanity, volunteered at Help-in-Crisis, the Tahlequah Food Pantry, Oklahoma Production Center and the Tahlequah Community Playhouse. With TCP he acted in plays from 1981-2012 and built many of the sets with his children and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents Dorris Dudley and Christine M. Brown; and his brother, Gordon Hall Brown. He is survived by his wife Sara of Tahlequah, OK; daughter, Sara and Keith Dunlap of Ft. Gibson, OK, daughter, Kristen L. Brown of Bethlehem, Palestine; son, Jesse Chanda Brown of Jacksonville, FL; grandsons, David, Jesse, and Noah Dunlap; granddaughters, Megan and Carly Brown; brother, Barney and Antonia Brown of Lexington, VA; sister, Connie Carpenter of Richmond, VT; brother, Robert and Susan Brown of Durham, NC. Dudley; two sisters-in-law; seven nieces; eleven nephews; and numerous friends around the world.
The Memorial service for Dudley Brown will be on Friday 7 July 2017 at 10:00 a.m. at Tahlequah First United Methodist Chruch.
