Funeral services for Dorthene Lessley Pointer, are 10:00 am, June 7, 2019 at Green Country Funeral Home. Interment will follow in the Sallisaw City Cemetery under the care of Green Country Funeral Home. Officiating will be Rev. Tom Hawkins. Serving as pallbearers are David Lessley, Lea Lessley, Steve Lessley, Louis Walkingstick, and Jordan Kynes. Honorary pallbearers are Judge Lynn Burris, JD Carey, Robert Blackstone Carlile, and Jimmy McSpadden.


DORTHENE LESSLEY POINTER, 91, OF TAHLEQUAH, PASSED AWAY MONDAY JUNE 3, 2019 AT THE CHEROKEE COUNTY REHABILITATION AND NURSING CENTER IN TAHLEQUAH. SHE WAS BORN SEPTEMBER 25, 1927 IN SALLISAW, OKLAHOMA.

DORTHENE ATTENDED OKLAHOMA STATE UNIVERSITY AND GRADUATED FROM NORTHEASTERN STATE UNIVERSITY. SHE TAUGHT ART IN MIDDLE SCHOOL WHILE HER HUSBAND, ED POINTER ATTENDED MEDICAL SCHOOL.
WHILE IN SALLISAW, DORTHENE WAS ACTIVE IN COMMUNITY AFFAIRS, WHILE RAISING HER CHILDREN DEBORAH AND PATRICK. SHE SERVED ON THE LAKEWOOD REGIONAL GIRL SCOUTS COUNCIL AND WAS A MENTOR TO MANY GIRLS IN HER TROOP FROM BROWNIES TO CADETS.
AFTER MOVING TO TAHLEQUAH IN 1972, SHE CONTINUED HER COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT, PARTICULARLY MATTERS INVOLVING HER CHEROKEE HERITAGE AND THE FAMILY SUPPORT OF NORTHEASTERN STATE UNIVERSITY.
DORTHENE AND ED WERE INSTRUMENTAL IN OBTAINING THE CECIL DICK MURAL "THE BELOVED WOMAN" WHICH IS DISPLAYED IN THE CHEROKEE NATION COUNCIL CHAMBERS IN TAHLEQUAH.

DORTHENE WAS PRECEDED IN DEATH BY HER HUSBAND, DR. ED L. POINTER, HER PARENTS, CLARENCE AND EMMA LESSLEY, BROTHERS BERNIE AND LAWTON LESSLEY AND HER GRANDPARENTS, MAMIE AND WALTER FLOYD OF AKINS.
SHE IS SURVIVED BY HER DAUGHTER, DEBORAH POINTER KYNES AND HER HUSBAND, ALLEN OF DUNEDIN, FLORIDA, AND HER SON, PATRICK POINTER AND ETHEL OF TAHLEQUAH, HER GRANDSON, JORDAN KYNES OF BERLIN, GERMANY ; GRANDAUGHTER, LESSLEY ADAIR KYNES AND GREAT GRANDAUGHTERS, OLIVIA AND LUCY OF TAMPA, FLORIDA, MANY FRIENDS AND LOVED ONES AND A HOST OF FOND MEMORIES.
IN LIEU OF FLOWERS, THE FAMILY REQUESTS THAT A DONATION BE MADE TO THE NSU FOUNDATION OR TO A FAVORITE CHARITY.
