Carl Eugene Ross was born on Feb. 4, 1950, in Tahlequah, the son of Johnson (Johnny) and Agnes Christie-Pumpkin. He attended school at Seneca Indian School In Wyandotte, Okla., and then Sequoyah High School in Tahlequah. He then attended Tulsa Welding School, where he obtained his welding certification.
Carl was the kind of person that everyone enjoyed spending time with. He was quick witted and had a great sense of humor. In high school, he was the quarterback, loved to tease and heckle all his friends and family. He was raised speaking Cherokee and was forced to learn English at Seneca Indian School. He liked to dance and shoot pool. He was happiest when with his family and friends. Carl was immensely proud of his children and grandchildren. Even when his health became poor, he continued to be his ornery self. He loved his friends in the community. Whenever he was able, Carl showed his respect by attending the funeral services of those he knew. If a loved one was in the hospital, he was the first to sit with them.
His health failed him and Carl passed in his sleep on Sept. 5, 2016, at his home in Tahlequah. Carl was 66 years old. He will be greatly missed by all those who knew and loved him.
Carl is preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Adam Ross and Katie Kingfisher-Ross; his maternal grandparents, William and Jenny Christie; his mom and dad; his stepdad, George Pumpkin; and aunts and uncles.
Those left to cherish his memory include his sons and daughters, KaDah Ross of Skiatook, Lone Elk Akers of Skiatook, Carl Ross Jr. "JR" and wife Nico of Lawton, Johnathan Ross of Oklahoma City, Casey Ross of Tulsa, and Carlye Ross of Norman. He also leaves many nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends and loved ones.
