Betty's Story

WICHITA, Kan. – Betty Louise Wetzel, 92, passed away Monday, Sept. 14, 2015. She was born Sept. 17, 1922, to Edward Calhoun and Laura Elizabeth (Starrett) Holbrook in Tahlequah. She married Boin Lee Smith on Nov. 6, 1943, in Great Bend, Kan. After his death in 1952, she moved, along with her daughters, to Wichita, Kan., where she worked for Cessna Aircraft. Betty married James Everett Wetzel in Winfield, Kan., on Feb. 26, 1953. She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands; and 13 brothers and sisters. Betty is survived by her children, Pat Binder and her husband Larry of Sugar Land, Texas, Priscilla Clark and her husband Thomas of Friendswood, Texas, Linda Bernabie of Noblesville, Ind., and Tony Wetzel and his wife Betty, of Seattle, Wash.; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandson. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m., Friday, Sept. 18, at Culbertson-Smith Mortuary, 115 S. Seneca, Wichita, Kan., with visitation one hour prior. Interment to follow at Old Mission Cemetery, 3424 E. 21st St. North, Wichita. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. BOX 758517, Topeka, KS 66675.
